Health & Safety

"Soroche" disease height

The altitude sickness affects many people during their first days in Cusco. Symptoms of the disease include the height of headache, fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, insomnia and breathing problems.
To prevent "soroche", relax on the first day: avoid physical effort, try to eat snacks, avoid cigarette and alcohol, take a hot drink coca (mate made with coca leaves). Symptoms of the disease directly from the height can last several days, and if it is very severe, we suggest you visit a doctor.

Problems with stomach
Symptoms include nausea, diarrhea and vomiting. Avoid eating raw vegetables or water pipe so you do not get sick. Some people eat in restaurants tourist while others like to eat on the street and are in good condition. This depends on your personal decision. If you want to be very careful, we recommend brushing your teeth with purified water.
Despite precautions, more than half the visitors have problems with the stomach. If you are concerned, try to rest and take plenty of fluids. In pharmacies sold the oral rehydration solution (ORS) and can help replace lost fluids. If symptoms persist for more than three days, probably should visit a doctor!

Burn in the sun

Please note that the sun is strongest at that altitude at sea level. Since Cusco is located 3, 630 meters above sea level (10 500 feet) is easy to suffer burns due to the sun, even if it is cloudy! Take precautions to avoid the strong rays of the sun: wear a cap or hat and use cream for blocking the sun. Try not to stay too long under direct sunlight.

Security
Like any large tourist city, Cusco presents problems with thieves. Do not panic, but take some precautions and always take into account those around you. If something strange is happening (for example something wet it falls on his face, or food, or a group of people strange salutes him as if he were an old friend) first take care of their things! Do not be paranoid, but please be aware! Try not to bring bags, backpacks or large sums of money. Some people prefer to carry a photocopy of his passport and leave the original in a safe place for their accommodation. If possible, walk accompanied by one or more persons.

Do not walk through the city just after 9:30 pm. To address only registered taxis (telephone number; 222222 for example). Despite these precautions, if you or your friends suffer a theft, you must report it to police.

Money

You can change your money into one of the banks Avenida El Sol or in a "Casa de Cambio" (many of these exist in the Plaza de Armas or at Avenida El Sol). To change travellers' cheques go to a House of Change or the Bank of Credit.
The ATM teller at Avenida El Sol usually give you cash unlike many credit cards, but check the logo first! The Banco Latino and South Bank are the only banks that accept MasterCard credit cards or cards with the Cirrus logo-(these banks are on Avenida El Sol, ranges from the Plaza de Armas to the left, just after the Temple Del Sol).
Try to take low-denomination banknotes (S/10 or S/20), because it is very difficult to change the high denomination. On the other hand, verify that their dollars are found in good condition, otherwise these will not be accepted anywhere. American Express is located in Lima Tours (telephone 228431) Machu Picchu D24, is a bit distant if you want to get there by taxi.

Communications

The Post Office is located at Avenida El Sol, but many shops near the Plaza de Armas also sell stamps and boxes have to deposit their letters. Sending letters is worth S/6.00 to Europe or Australia and S/5.00 to the United States. The letters usually arrive at their destination between 10-12 days.
Students can make long distance calls and send faxes from the office located at tels Street East (near the Plaza de Armas) or from Telefonica del Peru located at Avenida El Sol. Faxes can be sent from or any number of locations near the Plaza de Armas by S/10.00 leaf.

Public transport in Cusco

Cusco has a public transport system which is very cheap on a combination of taxis and combis (minivans). The taxi transportation within the city has a cost of S/2.00, or S/3.00 after 10pm and transport in combination S/0.60. Students can travel in any of the two types of transport. The route followed by each combination should be stuck in the windshield, but ask if they pass by the place where you want to reach.
